The holiday season is upon us! This time of year is the perfect opportunity to incorporate some festive fun into the classroom. Join us for our session where we will explore winter and holiday themed STEAM projects and challenges that elementary students can collaborate on. We will dive into the benefits of STEAM in the elementary classroom and then explore specific examples and ready-made activities to try with your students. From designing and building an igloo with consumable materials to sending robots on a sleigh ride, your students will be engaged from start to finish!

Creative Storytelling with Robotics

Get ready for this twist on digital storytelling featuring robotics. In this cross-curricular workshop, we will discuss some best practices and things to consider when starting a storytelling project in your classroom. Then, we'll show you how to plan and code your device(s) to tell a story in a whole new way! We will also share some storytelling examples using one of our favorite robot friends, KIBO! You’ll get to try these skills out for yourself, so you too, can enhance your classroom's creativity!

Snow Much Fun with KIBO

Are you looking for a unique activity using KIBO? Now that the winter months are officially here and snow is starting to fall, we are going to need a snowplow! In this session, we will explore how to turn KIBO into a snowplowing robot to clean up cotton ball snow. We will review the basics of KIBO, discuss important materials needed, and how to add code to make the snowplow do its job. We will also explore the steps for following the engineering design process to design the snowplow, put our work to the test, and make improvements along the way. Once the snowplow has been created, we will dive into some unique activity ideas. Get ready for a flurry of fun with KIBO!

Sphero RVR Basics

Sphero RVR is a programmable robot car that takes coding to the next level! RVR customizations let you to connect third-party hardware, and can change the look and feel of this mobile robot! In this session, we'll discuss the basics of using the Sphero RVR to drive across terrains, connect hardware, code using sensors, and even play games. We'll also discuss activities that can be done right in the Sphero app. Let’s get our Sphero RVR rolling!

Sphero Mini Basics

Sphero Mini packs hours of entertainment into a programmable, robotic ball. With LED lights and live sensors, this robot gives students tons of possibilities to be creative. In this session, we’ll discuss the basics of using the Sphero Mini to drive, play games, and even code. We will also discuss activity examples that can be done right in the Sphero app. Let’s get our Sphero Mini robot rolling!

Go "Further" with pi-top

The Further website is now available for people to check out tutorials and projects to extend their pi-top skills. Join us as we explore Further's coding projects and learn how they can help students understand Python code, complete the physical construction of these great ideas, and more!

pi-top Project 1: Scratch Programming

Start your pi-top adventure with our first project-based session! We'll dig into Scratch 2, and how you can leverage this great coding resource on your pi-top 3. Together, we'll learn basic code blocks and make our first Scratch game.

Let's Create a Sphero Jack-o-Lantern

Looking for a technology-infused Halloween activity for your classroom? In this session, we'll guide you through an interactive lesson on how to "dress up" your Sphero and program it to be a spooky Jack-o-lantern! This session will focus on practicing 3D printing and coding skills as students learn to program Sphero. Students will also build collaboration and creativity skills as they work through the design process together.

Pi-top Sounds with Speaker, PULSE and Sonic Pi

Let’s get musical! In this session, we’ll add sound with a pi-top speaker and PULSE unit. To illustrate the musical capabilities of your pi-top, we will also jump into Sonic Pi.

Let's Get Rolling with KIBO

We’ve reviewed the basics, and looked at some fun ways to incorporate KIBO into lessons. Now it’s time to expand on KIBO’s abilities, and get rolling with its connections to the foundational physics concepts of motion, force, and friction!
